This illustration was my entry for the UN Women Global Call “Artivism for Gender Equality”. The challenge was for artists all around the world to create a piece of static artwork that captures one of UN Women’s Generation Equality key messages in a clear, impactful, and shareable way.
The key message that I chose to depict in my piece was Freedom from Discrimination and Harmful Stereotypes. I decided to approach the theme by doing what I love the most – that is, to depict a group of women, engaged in casual conversation, looking at each other. This way I wanted to depict the women as active participants instead of passive subjects that only exist to be gazed upon. Depicting women from visible minorities, I wanted to steer clear from harmful stereotypes, yet still give each woman her personal sense of fashion. This way I aimed to depict all of the three women as individuals, as something… real.
